Commissioned by WingoCase

perch 1.0

Background

Perch1.0 was designed for individuals who use digital devices every day, adapting them to better fit the human body, so people can be more productive, creative and comfortable.

initial concepting

The initial concepts were developed around the existing design language of the WingoCase iPad Mini. The focus of their products are the wings that pull out and rest on the hand so individuals can use their devices without having to grip them.

perch 1.0 design round 1

In the final design of  Perch 1.0 Round 1, we made the base rectangular to create a continuing radius on the top and bottom edges and gave the wing a circular diameter for a softer feel. At the request of the Wingo internal team, we also increased the width to allow limited functionality as a profile stand.

While this gave limited functionality as a portrait stand, it was a step backwards aesthetically and functionally, looking too bare and large. At this point, we decided it was time for us to reevaluate the form and function  in depth and it became our focus to thoroughly evaluate the product ergonomically, aesthetically, mechanically, and for DFM (Design for Manufacture).

perch 1.0 redesign

Aesthetically, we wanted to get closer to the design language of the WingoCase iPad Mini and implemented more curvature in the base of the redesign concepts.

Final design

The final design of Perch 1.0 meshes utility with ergonomics to create a product unique in aesthetics and functions.

A hollow wing allows for the product to be propped by just the fingers or "perched" between the thumb and index finger. An overmolded wing ensures comfort in any position.
